Warrior’s Realm 13 Report
22/04/2008 - 10:00PM
Warrior’s Realm returned to the Southport RSL for its 13th event, featuring a bantamweight championship defense by Michael Mortimer and some of Australia’s best up and coming talent from our premier fight camps. As former Warriors Realm champions make waves internationally in the world’s largest MMA organisations, tonight was a chance for the new breed to step up and make their mark. Eight fights were featured on the card, and what they lacked in length they made up for in action.
WR 13 kicked off with a welterweight fight between Newcastle’s Rod Stadder and Knut Thoreson from Brisbane’s Advanced MMA. After a brief feeling out period on the feet, Stadder ended up on top in Thoreson’s half guard. Whilst Stadder attempted to do damage from top position, Knut managed to regain his full guard and soon after transitioned nicely into and arm bar from the bottom to tap out Stadder midway through the 1st round.
Heavyweight Jeff King returned to the hexagon to face Michael Van Der Vilst from Penrith Elite, and looked to take the fight to the ground early. Van Der Vilst however was able to reverse the position and end up on top of ‘Batman’. King showed improved ground skills from his back, as he threw up two close arm bar attempts, forcing Van Der Vilst to work hard for the escapes.
Van Der Vilst ended up throwing leg kicks at a grounded King, who made it back to his feet only to have another takedown reversed and from there Van Der Vilst was able to pin King against the cage and rain down blows. A few solid punches dazed King and the referee stepped in to stop the fight, giving Van Der Vilst the TKO victory in the 1st round.
Andrew Specht and Sean Sutherland put on a two round war in their welterweight clash, taking the fight to all parts of the cage. Specht won the first round with some nice work on the feet, landing several left hooks and scoring in the clinch. He fought off a guillotine attempt from half guard, managed to pass, and the first round ended with them trading blows on the feet. Both men had put a lot of energy into the 1st round, but it was Sutherland who came out stronger in the second, and landing some nice body shots in the clinch. Sutherland eventually muscled Specht to the canvas, and sprawled nicely on his foe, dealing damage from there whilst maintaining a headlock. After 2 rounds the judges awarded them a round a piece, resulting in a draw under the 10 point must system.
Wesley Capper brought the ‘novelty hat’ back to the MMA arena for his pre and post fight appearances, as he took on Wayne Nicolls in another welterweight bout. Both men looked comfortable landing low kicks early before Capper hit a big double leg slam, landing in side control. Nicolls made it back to his feet where he landed a nice right hand, however Capper clinched and took him down again. From there Capper was able to mount and eventually take the back of Nicolls where he secured a tap thanks to a 1st rd Rear Naked Choke.
Grappling wizard Gustavo Falciroli took on Integrated MMA’s Ryan Mortimer in the featherweight division, looking for his first win. Mortimer pressed his striking advantage early, landing a nice punch the had the ex pat Brazilian applauding his opponent. From there however, Falciroli looked to take the fight into his comfort zone, and landed a nice trip takedown on Mortimer. Falciroli worked to advance position, whilst Mortimer showed some good ground defense of his own as he regained guard. Falciroli showed the merits of a BJJ blackbelt as he showed some nice balance and technique to advance to the mount, and as Mortimer tried to bridge and roll to reverse the position Falciroli caught an arm bar in the transition.
Many diehard fans were salivating at the prospect of a war between the talented duo of Ian Bone and Xavier Lucas, and both men arrived in fantastic shape. Early exchanges on the feet were fairly even, and ended up with the fighters trading in the clinch against the cage. Xavier managed to make space and cracked Bone with a huge punch that buckled him to the canvas, where he moved in for the kill and secured a first round TKO stoppage. Whilst not the long battle many were hoping for, it was a highly impressive performance by Mach 1’s Lucas and left fans looking forward to his next appearance in the cage.
Local favorite Jai Bradney was matched against Jason Harris in a lightweight battle, and it was Harris who took the early initiative landing some leg kicks and clinching with Bradney, eventually scoring a takedown. Bradney held firm with a deep over hook, before showing the results of his cross training by luring Harris into a triangle choke. Harris valiantly tried to fend off the choke whilst Bradney started to celebrate slightly prematurely, however when Jai cinched up the choke and pulled on Harris’ head he was left with no choice but to tap.
It was obvious many Mortimer fans had made the trip down from Brisbane to cheer on their charge in the nights main event, as he looked to end the night on a high note for the Integrated MMA camp. He was faced with a very tough challenger in Alex Shevstov, originally from Russia but now based in Perth.
Shevstov showed just how tough in the early exchanges as he landed nicely on the incumbent champion, and scored a nice take down. Mortimer however showed why he has the belt as he kept his composure and worked from his back, keeping his hips moving and coming very close to an arm bar. Shevstov managed to escape Mortimer’s first submission attempt by spinning put of the arm lock, however Mortimer used the cage to create the angle he needed to lock in an even tighter arm bar from the bottom, leaving Shevstov nowhere to go and defending his title by submission in the first round.
The night was packed with definitive answers with 7 of the 8 fights ending inside the allotted time. Fans were treated to knock outs and submissions, as the victorious fighters pressed their claims for shots at the various Warriors Realm titles on future cards.

Michael Mortimer will
again take on Takao Kitahira at
Warriors Realm 11. M Mortimer and
Kitahira fought each other in an
exciting match at Warriors Realm
10 in August, with Mortimer getting
the judges nod. This time they will
again face off but with the Warriors
Realm Australian Bantamweight title
on the line. This title fight came
about by Daniel Lima being unable
to contest due to injury. Perths
Alex Shevstov was also in consideration
after beating Kitahira by Kimura
in Perth back in June. Kitahira
then threw a spanner in the works
by defeating Shevstov by TKO (roundhouse
kick to the head) in a rematch just
a week after his loss to Mortimer
at WR10.
Ryan Mortimer the younger brother
of Michael will make his return
to the Hexagon when he faces WR
veteran Steve Gillinder. Mortimers
team approached WR management wanting
a tough fight for there young fighter.
Gillinder is a very experienced
and tough competitor and although
he has not fought for twelve months
says he is refreshed and ready to
bang! |

Korey
Gibson |
|
|
|
| Gracie Sydney/Double
Dragon Team fighter Alex Prates
will compete for the WR Australian
Lightweight title against the talented
up and coming Integrated fighter
Korey Gibson on November 9. This
title was previously held by Adrian
Pang which he won when he defeated
Stuart Nairne way back at WR2 in
December 2005. Pang has stood down
as Lightweight Champion to enable
this title fight to go ahead (Pang
now fights at a lighter weight).
Prates is a phenomenal grappler
with international BJJ competition
credentials. He will he very hard
to stop at his new weight of U70kgs.
Gibson although on paper the underdog,
is a tough, tough character with
powerful standup ability and knowing
that he trains under Dan Higgins
and the Integrated crew will no
doubt have the sklls on the ground
to make it a hard day at the office
for Prates. |

|
A man who in the
near future would like a WR title
for himself is Jon Leven. Leven
recently fought in Perth against
Xavier Lucas and although lost
the decision showed how tough
he really was by taking it too
and being the first MMA fighter
to go the distance with Lucas.
Leven also showed a marked improvement
in his ground game in that fight.
Leven is set to take on QLD's
Andrew Specht. Interestingly the
last time Specht fought was the
first time Leven fought way way
back at WR 4 in 2005. That night
specht dislocated his hip after
being slammed by Byron Donnelly
in the Welterweight Eliminator. |

Justin Murray is set to face newly

at Spartan 14 back in October 2005,
in what was a close fight that could
have gone either way Cain won the
decision. Murray has wanted the
chance to redeem that loss ever
since and will soon have his opportunity.
Both these fighters have gained
experience and improved as fighters
in the two years since they last

Realm a hit on Fox

Warriors
Realm 10 - Australia vs Hawaii
12/08/2007 - 3:00pm
Warrior’s Realm returned to the Southport
RSL club hot on the heels of a sellout
card in WR 9. Once again the fans packed
in to the venue to see what promised
to be another amazing night of fights,
featuring a Triple Main Event of an
Australian title fight plus two Australia
vs. Hawaii International Superfights.
The night kicked off with the fighter
parade and group standoff, with a mixture
of relaxed, focused and intense looks
between the fighters highlighted by
some antics from Hawaiian bad boy Albert
“Always Bad” Manners. Manners jumped
around, blew kisses and generally acted
the clown during the introductions,
which was met with an icy stare from
opponent Daniel Lima.
After the group introduction and a
performance from the musical guest,
the night kicked off with Port Macquarie’s
Jason Harris versus Integrated/Fairtex
fighter Korey Gibson at 74kg. This was
Harris’ MMA debut whilst Gibson looked
to extend his perfect 3-0 record. Harris
opened the bout with some leg kicks
but was met with a solid double leg
takedown from Gibson. Harris managed
to grab hold of Gibson’s neck with a
guillotine attempt, but the Integrated
fighter managed to pass to side control
and free his head.
Harris scrambled to his feet after some
positional jostling but was promptly
put down again by Gibson who this time
managed to get Harris’ back and sink
a fight ending Rear Naked Choke at 4:21
of the first round. Gibson managed to
extend his record to 4-0, whilst Harris
gave an excellent account of himself
in his MMA debut.
The second fight of the night pitted
highly touted soldier Ian Bone from
Townsville against Brad Thompson trained
Jim Taylor. Bone opened up with some
leg kicks, forcing Taylor to shoot,
but Bone demonstrated his wrestling
skills by stuffing Taylor’s attempts.
In the scramble for ground position
Bone managed to get behind Taylor and
sink a Rear Naked Choke, which was so
tight he managed to get the tap without
needing to put his hooks in at 1:36
of the first.
Whilst Taylor seemed disappointed with
the finish, Bone was highly impressive
and even amusing during his post fight
interview claiming it was “the most
fun two guys can have with their clothes
off!”. Bone’s combination of fighting
skills and personality should see him
return a crowd favorite at 80kg.
Next up were former training partners
Mick Mortimer from Integrated versus
Takao Kitahira from Advanced Martial
Arts who had entrance song of the night
with Bob Marley’s “One Love”. Takao’s
resemblance to eccentric Japanese fighter
Genki Sudo was further highlighted when
he came out for the first round in Crane
pose doing his best Karate Kid Impersonation.
Mortimer wanted nothing to do with the
funny stuff and promptly clinched with
Kitahira. The first round was close
with both men getting takedowns and
working their ground and pound. Kitahira
punctuated the end of the first round
by opening a cut on Mortimer, however
Michael came out strong in the second
with a nice take down. He then managed
to pass Takao’s guard and get mount,
and Takao was able to defend long enough
to throw his legs up under Mortimer’s
arms and escape the mount into a very
unusual tangle of bodies where neither
man could land shots on the other. Mortimer
ended up in guard and after a stand
up managed to hit another take down
and seal himself a spilt points decision
for the win.
Jai Bradney made his highly anticipated
return to the Warrior’s Realm Hexagon
after a big KO victory on debut at WR
9. The Five Rings representative faced
a tall order in facing debutant BJJ
Black Belt Bernado Magalhaes at 69kgs.
The match was a classic stylistic contradiction
of Bradney’s potent Muai Thai striking
against Bernado’s grappling expertise.
The first round was a tentative in parts
with both men trying to find their range,
although Bradney managed to land some
leg kicks as he looked to set up the
big left straight that garnered a KO
in his last bout. Bernado eventually
managed to score a takedown off the
cage fence and worked his ground and
pound as he looked to pass Bradney’s
guard. Eventually the fighters found
their way back to their feet and Bradney
scored with a sweet left hook but didn’t
manage to follow up and finish.
In the second Bradney landed another
left but Bernado managed to score another
Takedown and Bradney had to use all
his skills to avoid Magalhaes’ submissions
attempts. The fighters got to their
feet but in the scramble Bernado managed
to land a perfectly timed kick to Bradney’s
face just as he got to his feet. The
grappler then scored the take down for
some more ground and pound and held
on to win a unanimous decision.
The Australian Welterweight Title was
on the line after the interval with
Intergrated MMA’s Matt Cain taking on
the dangerous Jon Valuri from Mach 1
in Perth.
Valuri wasted no time in throwing a
huge right hand right off the bat and
followed it up with a nice take down
on Cain. Valuri worked his ground striking
until Cain was able to stifle his attack
and gain a stand up. Towards the end
of round one Valuri split open Matt
Cain’s cheek , but “The Rolling Bear”
was all clear to continue.
Cain opened the second by gaining double
underhooks and picking Valuri up on
his shoulder as he looked for a huge
slam. Valuri managed to avoid a massive
impact but Cain ended up on top, until
they were stood up by the Referee.
From the stand up Valuri hit a takedown
of his own and had a close Rear Naked
Choke attempt on Cain, but Cain kept
his chin tucked long enough to manage
to spin into Valuri and eventually get
a stand up. The second round finished
in the clinch with the two exchanging,
and in the third round they went right
back to it. Cain landed a knee and managed
to reverse Valuri and gain top position,
but Valuri demonstrated his grappling
skills by sweeping Cain and getting
back on top. Cain was bleeding and possibly
down by two rounds at this point but
from the bottom threw up his legs and
managed to secure a very tight arm bar
on Valuri. Jon had no choice but to
tap at 1:35 of the third round, crowning
Matt Cain the Warrior’s Realm Welterweight
champion.
Post fight Jon was gracious in defeat,
and Cain expressed in no uncertain terms
his delight in pulling the win out of
the fire. After the show Cain stuck
to his pre fight prediction that the
longer the fight the stronger he’d become,
and proved himself right with a great
submission victory.
The first International Superfight
saw Hawaiian invader and BJ Penn Protégé
Albert “Always Bad” Manners take on
Local Favorite Daniel “Lil Devil” Lima.
Manners delivered on pre show reputation
by dancing his way to the cage and engaging
in a variety of Shenanigans once inside.
Fight Club Jiu Jitsu leader Daniel Lima
entered to a huge local reception and
the atmosphere was charged with what
promised to be a highly entertaining
fight between two aggressive fighters.
With the fighters given their instructions
and Manners landing a kiss on Lima as
they hooked up gloves, the crowd erupted
as the Referee started the fight. Manner’s
set the tone for the ensuring action
as he simultaneously touched gloves
and delivered a kick to Lima’s ribs
as they came out for the first round.
That elicited a shower of boos and taunts
from the crowd as the two traded of
their feet. Lima was aggressive and
just missed with a wild right hand,
but Manners was able to make the most
of his reach advantage and rocked Lima
with a huge punch that sent Daniel to
the canvas. Manners attempted to follow
up for a stoppage but Lima used all
his experience to hide his head from
further punishment until he could regain
his bearings. Lima ended up on top on
the ground but in a tight looking triangle,
as Manners looked to finish the fight
this time from his back.
The choke appeared tight, and Manners
peppered Lima with elbows as he defended,
but Lima was able to refute Manner’s
pre fight assertion that his BJJ black
meant nothing in MMA by riding out the
danger of his submission attempts and
using the time to rest and recuperate
after the knockdown. Manners was using
a lot of energy from the bottom trying
to finish but was unable to do so and
after reaching a stalemate the Referee
stood the fighters up.
On their feet Lima looked to have largely
recovered, whilst Manners was starting
to show the effects of a long trip and
tough weight cut. The first round finished
with Lima landing some solid strikes
from the clinch, rescuing what could
have almost been a 10-8 round. Lima
went to his corner complaining of a
finger in the eye, and was trying to
get his vision fully recovered as they
started the second. Manners came out
looking far more drained after a big
first round, and the pair traded on
the feet before Lima managed to score
a takedown from the clinch. The Australian
representative dropped some effective
elbows on Manners and after a scramble
to the feet the exhausted Hawaiian pulled
guard. Lima threw strikes to the legs
and even tried a few flying stomps to
the body until he ended up back in Manner’s
guard attempting to land bombs. Manners
got back to his feet and as the horn
blew for the end of the round, both
fighters continued to exchange for a
few seconds until separated. Lima looked
to have turned the momentum of the fight
and taken the second round, and also
appeared to be the fresher fighter as
we entered the final.
After an exchange the fighters were
separated so the doctor could attend
to Manners as he claimed to have been
hit in the eye himself. The crowd grew
increasingly restless as Manners was
afforded a long rest period as he was
checked. With the fight restarted and
Lima starting to find his range, Manners
then claimed a shot to the groin. Given
time to recover the fighters reengaged,
and again Manners had the fight stopped
for and alleged groin shot, much to
the disapproval of the vocal crowd.
Manners managed to get more time to
recover as his groin protection was
adjusted.
This angered both the crowd and Lima,
as once the fight was restarted he punished
Manners with low kicks, punches and
elbows from the clinch. The Hawaiian’s
Gas tank was empty by this point and
was trying to land a Hail Mary punch
off Lima’s leg kicks but Lima ended
the final round with multiple strikes
to his fatigued opponent. Initially
words were being exchanged inside the
cage leading up to the judge’s decision
as both fighters were unhappy with the
other, but the crowd erupted in applause
as Daniel Lima was named the winner
of the first Superfight by unanimous
decision. Eventually the tempers simmered
down, and Manner’s even returned to
the cage later to apologise to the crowd
for his antics and say that he hoped
to return sometime soon. Lima left the
crowd a popular winner, and looks forward
to making a charge at the 135lb Shooto
title.
Heavyweights Jeff ‘Batman” King from
Zen Training centre and Master Jiu Jitsu
fighter Damon McClure faced off in the
penultimate fight of the night, in what
promised to be a battle of the impressively
powerful physique of ‘Batman’ versus
the ground skills of McClure.
King came forward early and managed
to score a nice double leg takedown
but McClure managed to hang tight and
avoid punishment from the bottom. Damon
then threw his legs up and managed to
secure a triangle choke on King, and
whilst not appearing to be fully applied
King’s muscular physique ended up being
his downfall as the triangle choke pushed
his own shoulder muscles into his throat,
getting a tap at 48 seconds of the first
round.
The Final Match of the event and second
International Superfight saw Adrian
‘The Hunter’ Pang looking to improve
Integrated MMA’s record to a perfect
4-0 for the event as he squared off
against Hawaiian Dave “the Mad Mongoose”
Moreno.
Former Army Ranger Moreno showed the
influence of his move to the BJ Penn
camp, with his stand up technique displaying
the stylistic fingerprints of “The Prodigy”.
Moreno ended up shooting off a punch
and landing a nice takedown on Pang.
The first round was a highly technical
ground battle as Moreno looked to pass
Pang’s guard and strike, whilst Pang
did an excellent defensive job off his
back. Late in the round Pang managed
to reverse the Hawaiian and looked to
strike from the top while Moreno attempted
to maneuver into position for a submission
attempt.
The Second round saw both fighters launch
simultaneous kicks, resulting in a slip
by Moreno and Pang getting top position.
Pang attempted to effectively strike
from the top, whilst Moreno hung on
tight from the bottom to avoid punishment.
Late in the period the fighters were
restarted, but Pang scored another takedown
to secure the round.
The fight went into the final round
appearing to be even so both fighters
were looking to press forward and secure
victory. Pang hit a nice low kick and
turned it into a takedown, but Moreno
managed to reverse the position and
get on top. Whilst Pang managed to keep
Moreno tight and avoid giving him any
space to wind up, Moreno managed to
land a sharp elbow that cut Pang above
the left eye. After the doctor checked
the cut and decided Pang could continue,
the fighters continued their battle
on the ground. Dave attempted to land
a big bomb from top position, but ended
up in an arm triangle. As Pang was looking
to tighten the submission, the referee
again stopped the fight to check the
cut. After a few anxious moments for
‘The Hunter’, he was cleared to continue
from the same position. Within 10 seconds
of the restart, Adrian was able to tighten
the Arm triangle and force the tap from
the visiting fighter at 2:38 of the
final round.
Once again the event was a huge success,
featuring great fights and amazing fighters.
The crowd was highly vocal and supportive
of their favorite fighters, and managed
to cheer Australia home to a 2-0 sweep
of the International Superfights. Matt
Cain became our first WR Welterweight
Champion; some impressive debutants
suggested we have some huge battles
in the near future and a special mention
to Integrated MMA who managed a clean
4-0 sweep for their fighters. Thanks
again to all those involved and who
attended, and we’ll see you all at WR
11!
